I’d never won anything for my professional writing, which I’ve been doing for 32 years, until Monday, when I found out that I won two!
Thank you to 48 Hills for nominating two of my features for consideration at the annual California Journalism Awards, which is hosted by California Newspaper Publishers Association. A fabulous surprise!
In our division, I won first place for Music Writing for “Dissecting SF’s surprise rave” and second place in Film/TV Reporting for “‘Groove’ is (still) in the heart.”
The latter gives me an excuse to share this classic photo of Dmitri from the Lower Haight, the real star of Groove.

Both of these stories are about raves, past and present, and the recognition from the California Journalism Awards motivates me to keep working on the many stories I have to tell in this space.
48 Hills is a nonprofit media outlet that can use more subscriber donors to continue their mission to deliver news and culture stories that aren’t influenced by billionaire-backed corporations. I love writing for them!
